In January of 2013, the JAYC Team held the last of a nine week series of classes at an Elementary School in Napa, California. This school, headed by their principal Pam Perkins, is a magnet school whose mission is to teach students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, through artful learning.
Mission Statement: “Salvador Elementary commits to the artistic process, creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking as the model for learning across disciplines while inspiring our diverse community with a passion for curiosity.”
The curriculum is a close fit for the JAYC group lessons of awareness, connection, attunement, integrity, compassion, caring, safety, instinct, respect, creativity, support, trust and empathy. The group material focuses around “cow culture” in order to highlight the importance of interdependence in our diverse communities. The equine based activities were reflected by the school’s mascot, the Mustang. This group served thirty fourth graders who each took away something new to live by. We hope to return to this school to serve a select group of fourth graders each year. Below are some pictures of our Salvador Experience.
